PRAISE FOR SMILE, HON SEX ISSUE!
In related news, former Tower Records distributor Clint Johns praises the sex-soaked Smile, Hon, You're in Flagrante! in the brand-new Xerography Debt #27, out now from Leeking Inc. and Microcosm Publishing. Johns calls Flagrante "sophisticated...the authors are almost evenly distributed by sex, and the overall tone is Anais Nin rather than Penthouse Letters. I can't recommend this highly enough." Read his complete review and those for many other fine zines in Xerography Debt #27, now available from Atomic Books, Microcosm and Leeking Inc.

SMILE, HON SEEKING SUBMISSIONS!
Smile, Hon, You're in Baltimore! is accepting submissions of your Mobtown-related stories, essays, poetry, photography and other artwork for the forthcoming Smile, Hon No. 13 through Friday, August 13, 2010. Creative non-fiction is preferred, though all submissions will be considered. Articles (100 – 2,000 words) are preferably received via e-mail (wpt@eightstonepress.com) as attached Word documents. From the harbor to the hills, Smile, Hon, You're in Baltimore! collects the tales of those on whom Mobtown has left her indelible mark. A two-time Utne Independent Press Award Nominee, Smile, Hon has also been dubbed "Best Zine" by Baltimore Magazine (2008) and Baltimore City Paper (2004).

HELP EIGHT-STONE PRESS SUPPORT LOW-INCOME CANCER PATIENTS
It is important to me, as a cancer survivor, to do what I can to help others who have been diagnosed with/are fighting this terrible disease.

Every August since finishing chemotherapy (in September 2007), I have participated in the St. Vincent's Medical Center Foundation's "Swim Across the Sound", a daylong relay race that begins in Port Jefferson, NY, crosses Long Island Sound and finishes in Bridgeport, CT. I do not actually swim in the race – the thousands of jellyfish that drifted through the Sound my first year quickly cured me of any such motivation. Rather, I drive one of the boats that escort each team across the water, providing respite, refreshment and shade to the swimmers. Each year, I've been fortunate enough to work with the same team, a dedicated group of young ladies – led by team captain Kimberly Russo – who have now volunteered their efforts for this event for several years running, and I look forward to working with them again for this year's event on Saturday, August 7, 2010.

The particularly cool thing about the St. Vincent's Foundation is that all of the money raised, rather than going to research, directly benefits lower-income cancer patients (whose diagnosis may have left them unable to work, or otherwise hindered their ability to work) by helping them with regular household expenses such as groceries, utility bills, rent or even mortgage payments. To these ends, last year's Swim Across the Sound raised approximately $2.5 million.

Indeed, we are all feeling the effects of these hard economic times. But imagine, for a moment, the unspeakable difficulty of facing a cancer diagnosis on top of those day-to-day challenges. Bearing that in mind, I humbly appeal to you to help our team help the St. Vincent's Foundation in supporting those unfortunate enough to be experiencing that very scenario. Donations may be made here (and remember, no amount is too small).

Regular SMILE, HON contributor Doyle-Gillespie publishes book

BALTIMORE, Md. - Regular Smile, Hon, You're in Baltimore! contributor E. Doyle-Gillespie announces the publication of his book Masala Tea and Oranges, a collection of his poetry that explores the human condition through the lenses of such universals as sex, war, death, love, power and faith.

A Baltimore cop, Doyle-Gillespie is also a former teacher of History and English who holds an MLA from Johns Hopkins University and a BA in History from George Washington University - all of which informs his dark, vivid, often sexually-charged work. Check out his pieces "On History" and "Shopping" in Smile, Hon, You're in Flagrante!, the latest theme issue in the award-winning Smile, Hon, You're in Baltimore! series published by Eight-Stone Press. Pick up your copy of Masala Tea and Oranges here.

Back Door Man

Thanks to the 60 or 70-odd (or should I say 60 or 70 odd) people who attended the release party for Smile, Hon, You're in Flagrante! last Friday night at Atomic Books. Stellar showing of readers and listeners alike. Thank you to everyone who came to the reading, as well as special thanks to Atomic for hosting the event.

"IndieBookMan" Brad Grochowski had this to say of the evening:

[W]hat struck me was that we were listening to good, imaginative writing by good imaginative writers that, oh by the way, just happened to be about sex. This was a treat and is thanks to both Tandy for his editorial control, as well as the community of writers he has pulled around him. That you can have a whole evening of sex writing without a moment of cheap smutty erotica, I think, is a sign of good writers. [Read Grochowski's complete review here.]

And of course, afterward, the bartender of a local watering hole telling his patrons that they don't have to go home but that they can't go out the front door because the police have designated the street outside a crime scene for a block in either direction was simply icing on the cake.

A Spanish fly on the wall...

Here are a few more diamonds in the rough of Smile, Hon, You're in Baltimore's forthcoming sex issue:

"I'm filleted out of my clothes, my back to the wall..."

"I had a hard time explaining my situation to her. I stumbled around for a bit, until Frank, god bless him, yells out, 'His dick is broke!'..."

"It was glaringly clear that I would never stop feeling embarrassed until my voyeur died..."

"Predictably, we also come up with a safe-word – I usually recommend 'red', as it is short, can be mumbled with a ball-gag in place and tends not to be something one says casually that often in conversation..."

Tuesday, January 12, 2010

Do it too much and, sure enough, you'll go blind...

I'm probably jinxing myself when I say I've finally finished proofing all of the submissions to the forthcoming Smile, Hon, You're in Baltimore! sex issue. No sooner I post this and I'll probably discover a fresh cache of your first-hand smut.

Here are just a tiny handful of gems unearthed in the process:

"Meanwhile, her friend had decided to sit on my face and was getting off, like, all over the place. I didn’t even know what female ejaculation was at the time, but I didn't argue..."

"So, kids, the next time you pleasure yourself to a nice DVD or download some porn in a half-second, think of us old-schoolers who used to steal magazines from the local quickie mart and rub one out in the woods. You have no idea how lucky you are...."

"For an instant, he considered that she might have a sexual-addiction problem, or a venereal disease..."

"Some girls like to give head. I like to give foot..."

Baby!

I'd like to take a moment and thank everyone who submitted their perversions, kinks and desires (or lack thereof) for inclusion in the forthcoming Smile, Hon sex issue. They are so abundant that there stands a good chance of this being published as two (simultaneous) volumes. But more on that later. In the meantime, as Jason Hawes might say, "we're going to take some time to review all the evidence; in the meantime, get some sleep."

I'd also like to thank The Baltimore Sun's Nancy Johnston Knight for giving a last-minute shout-out on The Sun's "Read Street" blog. Nancy, if you're listening, I want you to know just how much I cherish being a part of what might very well be the only occasion on which any manifestation ofThe Baltimore Sun has published the line, "We're not looking for Penthouse's sloppy seconds here." And, by that same token, the following, which turned up as Google's top hit during a blog search for "smile hon" baltimore early this morning:

All contributors will receive a byline/artist credit for their work as well as two (2) complimentary copies of the issue in which their work appears. (Note: Contributors may use their own names, or, for anonymity, adopt a nom de plume, preferably of a raunchy or comical nature, for the purposes of the issue.)

From the harbor to the hills, the award-winning Smile, Hon, You're in Baltimore! collects the tales of those on whom Mobtown has left her indelible mark. Polished, professional essays; barroom sermons delivered from the sanctity of a favorite stool; the poet’s fleeting sentiment, captured in both word and snapshot – Smile, Hon offers a slice of Baltimore as told by Baltimore, presented with the time-honored DIY accessibility of a limited-run, handcrafted zine. A two-time Utne Independent Press Award nominee, Smile, Hon has also been dubbed "Best Zine" by Baltimore Magazine (2008) and Baltimore City Paper (2004). Previous "theme" issues have tackled such topics as rats, scars, crime, tattoos, transit and the supernatural.

An Eight-Stone Press production, Smile, Hon, You're in Baltimore! is distributed by Atomic Books (Baltimore, MD); City Lights Books (San Francisco, CA); Cyclops Books & Music (Baltimore, MD); Microcosm Publishing (Bloomington, IN, and Portland, OR); Quimby's (Chicago, IL) and Red Emma's Bookstore Coffeehouse (Baltimore, MD).
