SMILE, HON: Last Call

SMILE, HON, YOU’RE IN BALTIMORE! is accepting submissions of your Mobtown-related stories, essays, poetry, photography and other artwork for the forthcoming SMILE, HON No. 12 through tomorrow, Saturday, October 31, 2009. Creative non-fiction is preferred, though all submissions will be considered. Articles (100 – 2,000 words) are preferably received via e-mail (wpt@eightstonepress.com) as attached Word documents. Image files should be approximately 5” x 7”, 300+ dpi (.JPG or .TIF format). All contributors will receive a byline/artist credit for their work as well as two (2) complimentary copies of the issue in which their work appears.

From the harbor to the hills, SMILE, HON, YOU’RE IN BALTIMORE! collects the tales of those on whom Mobtown has left her indelible mark. Polished, professional essays; barroom sermons delivered from the sanctity of a favorite stool; the poet’s fleeting sentiment, captured in both word and snapshot – SMILE, HON offers a slice of Baltimore as told by Baltimore, presented with the time-honored DIY accessibility of a limited-run, handcrafted zine.

An Eight-Stone Press production, SMILE, HON, YOU’RE IN BALTIMORE! is available locally for purchase at Atomic Books (Hampden); Cyclops Books & Music (Station North); and Red Emma’s Bookstore Coffeehouse (Mt. Vernon). For more information, contact:

All the brouhaha aside, this really is a pretty cool photo.

SMILE, HON Editor on Tonight's INDIEBOOKMAN Radio Show

Here is the blurb on tonight's IndieBookMan Radio Show:

"This week, we sit down with William P. Tandy, Owner of Baltimore's Eight Stone Press, and publisher of the loosely Baltimore-based zine, Smile Hon, You're In Baltimore, a regular publication that highlights Baltimore, Baltimore writers and Baltimore themes. Smile Hon has been noted in Utne Reader several times, has been designated "Best Zine in Baltimore" by Baltimore Magazine, has gotten bumps from Baltimore City Paper, The Urbanite and The Baltimore Sun's "Read Street" blog. It even elicited then Baltimore City Mayor (now Governor) Martin O'Malley to write to Tandy at one point to say, "Your books have caused a bit of a stir in my office . . . "

Tandy is also at the center of a peculiar writers movement in Baltimore - organizing readings and open mics around town, and seems to draw those writers who most thouroghly personify the things we love most about Baltimore - the character, charm, kitch and quirk that is our city... these are the writers that coalesce around William P. Tandy and Smile Hon. Thank God.

Join us, you won't regret it. Join us October 28 at 8:00 PM EST at http://umbrellaradio.org for the live broadcast, listen to the archive at http://indiebookman.com, or subscribe to the podcast at http://bit.ly/ibm_podcast."

TH' LEGENDARY SHACK*SHAKERS - "Where's the Devil When You Need Him?"

In the Big House

Today, I attended my first gubernatorial press conference, at the State House in Annapolis. Here is a photo I took of Governor (and former Baltimore mayor) Martin O'Malley speaking with reporters in attendance:

Beginning with the third issue of Smile, Hon, You're in Baltimore!, and throughout O'Malley's tenure as mayor, I would send copies of each new edition to his office at City Hall. And to my surprise, he actually sent me several brief thank-you notes in return.

William of Rights

Quite frankly, I'm shocked at the number of people out and about on Baltimore's west side on a beautiful fall afternoon who are reluctant to take a few moments to stop and discuss the Bill of Rights with a complete stranger.

And believe me, it wasn't for lack of trying.

Jesus Hates Zombies

Generally speaking, I don't read comic books - never have. Still, today I found myself at the Baltimore Comic Con. Better still, I picked up Volume I of Stephen Lindsay's Jesus Hates Zombies, Featuring Lincoln Hates Werewolves. Yep, that Jesus. And that Lincoln. And having read through it this evening, my only regret is that I didn't pick up the other volumes Lindsay had on his table.

I suppose I'd look pretty pissed-off too if I were a) a scruffy, middle-aged white dude, b) walking down Baltimore Street, c) wearing a Melissa Ethridge t-shirt. (Then again, there are often few visual discrepancies between scruffy, middle-aged white dudes and scruffy middle-aged dudettes 'round these parts...)

CAMILLE SAINT-SAENS - "Danse Macabre"

As to whether or not they played "Chicken Danse Macabre" at Saint-Saens wedding, one can only speculate...

SMILE, HON: Baltimore, Why the Edge? II

The only thing cooler than being quoted in an article alongside John Waters is being quoted in an article alongside John Doe...who played Brad Wesley's nephew in the immortal Road House!
